The classroom wing of Harrison Preparatory School is just completing the rough-in work for mechanical, plumbing, electrical and fire sprinklers. Harrison Prep’s administrative and library areas are having light gauge steel framing and mechanical rough-in work installed.

The weather held out for another great month of construction. Rough-in construction for the elementary school classroom wing is complete. Now, classrooms and hallways are being sheet rocked. The north and east walls of the entire building are at full height and light gauge framing is being installed to fill out the façade. Brick and concrete block veneer are being installed in several different locations around the perimeter of the building. Windows are being glazed at the elementary school. The south side of the building houses the large gathering spaces including the elementary school multi-purpose room, Harrison Prep cafeteria and gymnasium. These larger spaces are taking shape as the multi-purpose room roof structure has been installed and the Harrison Prep cafeteria and gymnasium interior concrete block walls are reaching full height.
Construction progress for the new building is ahead of schedule and on track. Phase I site work, including all major water lines and fire hydrants, which allow for vertical construction, have been installed. The primary power infrastructure was installed and is ready and completed under Phase I site work as well.

The building foundations are 95 percent complete and the concrete slab floor is 75 percent complete. The elementary structural steel frame is 85 percent complete and roofing will begin. The work is progressing from west to east and then from the middle of the building south. The exterior shell will be about 80 percent complete by December 2014 with the building being complete during spring 2015.

From the aerial view, the steel framework of the classroom areas are visible. The steel roof decking is now complete for the new elementary school, the exterior of the steel framework in the elementary area is now being framed in with light gauge steel stud framing. The roof deck has been placed on this end of the building and mechanical unit curbs have been installed on the roof and roofing of this area will start this month. The central corridor of the building is defined by a concrete block wall, which continues to work vertical and towards the east. The northeast portion of Harrison Preparatory School is complete including the second floor structure. The concrete floor has been poured in this area and a retaining wall along Lakewood Drive is scheduled to be poured soon. This project is on schedule and within budget.

Steel columns and beams for the elementary school can be seen from Lakewood Drive as the steel skeleton for the west end of the building is now taking shape. The second floor metal decking is being placed in this area as well. Underground conduit and piping for the administration areas of both schools is being placed in preparation for the concrete slab installation. On the Harrison Prepend of the building, a large concrete block wall is being built to a height of 31 ft.

Work on the site is also progressing. South of the building pad, the kitchen’s underground grease interceptor has been installed and adjacent to the Harrison Prep science wing, the acid neutralization tank has also been placed in the ground. Roofing work is anticipated to begin this month over the new elementary, so classroom walls and infrastructure can be constructed. The work continues to progress from the west (elementary side) to the east (Harrison Preparatory side). The primary activities at this time are the foundations, which are 95 percent complete and the main concrete floor, which is 75 percent complete. The project is on schedule and within budget.

Much construction work has been done on Harrison Prep and the new elementary school. The majority of the underground utilities and concrete footings have been placed throughout the five construction areas. Concrete slabs have been poured in three of the five areas. The first real sign of construction can be seen from Lakewood Drive as a massive concrete block wall is being erected for the elementary school. “Green” building principles are evident on the construction site as construction debris is separated for recycling.

Construction is underway in earnest. This new building will house a full elementary school for 650 pupils along with the Harrison Prep student body planned for 800 students. To assist in the planning and construction process, the building is divided into five construction zones. Concrete foundations have been poured in three of the zones to date. Preparation is underway for concrete foundations in the remaining two zones. Underground plumbing and electrical conduit are being installed. Steel reinforcing bars can be seen rising out of the foundations in several spots where the major structural walls will be located.
The first concrete pour was done in late February and the technical process of reviewing drawings for the structural steel for the building is underway. This process allows for fabrications of the steel for the structural frame of the building. The deep sewer line has been completed for the new restroom facilities.
Phase I, the early site work, was finished on time and within budget. The school district received bids for construction of the new school, which came in within the estimated amount. Contracts have been signed with Berschauer Phillips Construction Company. Surveying and staking for the building layout is now complete and the initial foundation and sewer lines are being installed. The state has authorized state match funding availability.
Phase I is complete and the district just received bids for the new school, which were within the estimated amount. The state matching fund authorization is being finalized. Construction of the new building will start in the next 45 days.
Phase I site work, which included the demolition of all existing structures to make way for the new building; installation of the sewer, water and fire lines; base paving for key roads; and construction of a retaining wall, was completed on schedule. The architectural plans have been submitted to the appropriate city and county agencies for review.
The application to the state for school construction assistance funding has been submitted. The Phase I site work will be completed by the end of November. The work to date includes:
  • Demolition of all existing structures to make way for the new building;
  • Sewer and water lines are 95 percent complete;
  • Base paving of primary roads is 90 percent complete;
  • A new concrete retaining wall is almost finished, which will allow for work on the new playfield.
The architectural plans have been submitted to Lakewood’s Building Division, Pierce County Health Department and the fire marshall for review. The application to the state for school construction assistance funding is underway. The Phase I site work is well underway and will be completed by the end of November. The project is anticipated to be out to bid later this year subject to the above-mentioned jurisdictional approvals and state construction assistance funding process.
The design work is 70 percent complete; the completed design will be submitted for permitting in October. The demolition of all portables (previously used by Clover Park Technical College) is finished. Underground storm water systems are 80 percent complete. The sewer and water main installation is underway.
