Serraine named January Educator of the Month

This month’s Lakewood Rotary Educator of the Month, Park Lodge fourth grade teacher T.J. Serrianne, sees himself as a utility player. He has taught first, second, fourth and fifth grade during his 10 years at Park Lodge.

His experience teaching a fourth-fifth split class, in particular, helped inform his teaching this year.

“I now have a better understanding of what this year’s fourth graders need to know to be successful in fifth grade next year,” he said. “It also helped having the first and second grade background because it gave me some extra tools in my belt in terms of dealing with behaviors and reading levels that aren’t at a fourth grade level.”

An athlete through high school and college, Serrianne originally looked into teaching as an opportunity to coach young athletes. However, he worked at his local YMCA in high school and found a passion for teaching.

“I loved working with kids, I have patience for it,” he said. “At the YMCA, you had to take them on trips, get them to line up correctly. I learned to control a group, so after that, I just had to learn the academics part.”

Serrianne, who earned his bachelor’s degree in elementary education at Central Washington University, has followed through on his desire to coach by coaching lacrosse at the club level and at Stadium High School.

He was honored at the Jan. 5 Lakewood Rotary meeting.
